Ebook About
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “As inviting, wide-ranging, and philosophical as an all-night conversation with a best friend, and as revealing and thought-provoking as the diary of a curious adventurer.”—Sasha Sagan, author of For Small Creatures Such as WeYou can travel the world looking for yourself, but if you don't know what you're looking for, how can you find it? Like Streams To The Ocean is about examining the things that make us who we are and getting to know ourselves, our stories, and the decisions that shape our one and only life.  Writing with the passion and clarity that made his debut, To Shake the Sleeping Self, a national bestseller, Jedidiah Jenkins brings together new and old writings to explore the eight subjects that give life meaning: ego, family, home, friendship, love, work, death, the soul.Who am I? What am I made of? How much of how I act boils down to avoiding the things that make me feel small? As he examines the experiences that shape our conscious and subconscious answers to these questions, Jenkins leads readers in a wide-ranging conversation about finding fulfillment in the people and places around us and discovering the courage to show our deepest selves to the world.

Book Like Streams to the Ocean: Notes on Ego, Love, and the Things That Make Us Who We Are Review :

Streams to the Ocean is not only the title but the central metaphor in Jedidiah Jenkins’ new book. We are born into this life like rain falling from clouds, gather dirt like streams in experiencing the world and fade into the ocean to make way for new streamlets to carve their own path. It does well to provide some unity to thoughts that might otherwise seem scattered. And, though I disagree with some of Jenkins’ core assertions, I think the book is a success if its goal is to provide twenty somethings meaningful reflections on life and the identities that make us what we are.It has both large strengths and some weaknesses. Among its strengths is a style like you’re in a conversation with a good friend. Maybe it’s one a.m. and everyone has left the party except for you and he. With the help of alcohol, you muse, confess and laugh together. In keeping with this setting, Jenkins also achieves a tone of sincerity; even admitting to personal failings that most public personas might lie about if someone accused them of them. I don’t know him, but you’ll feel by the end of the book as if you wish you did. There are also some glaring weaknesses: not many of the reflections are particularly new or of much depth. He relies on scientific but still pop psychology for much of his material. At times it can feel like you’re listening in to his therapy session. These add up to where young adults may find it interesting, but those who are older or more well read may wish it had more heft.In the end, it won me over. The discordant notes of trite prose didn’t overwhelm self-evidently sincere reflections from an obviously decent person. Not a must read but, if you’re acquainted with some of Jenkins’ other writings, you’ll probably enjoy getting to know the author more personally.
I adored this book! It is a collection of essays, and is advertised as such, so I’m not sure why some are disappointed in “the story”. I’m prone to random, deep thoughts and I’ve always felt weird for that. Jed makes me realize I’m not alone, in the most beautiful way. I could read his journal every day for the rest of my life.
